ChatGPT, a new chatbot from OpenAI, has become the first multitasking artificial intelligence available to any user. Researchers believe that ChatGPT will seriously change many areas of our lives.
At the end of November 2022, OpenAI, co-founded by Elon Musk, introduced ChatGPT, a universal chatbot. It is able to perform a variety of tasks and is available to anyone. RBC Trends figured out how it works and in what areas it can become an assistant or even replace a human.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is a chatbot that can conduct a dialog, search for errors in the code, compose poetry, write scripts, and even argue.
ChatGPT was created on the Azure AI supercomputer based on the GPT-3.5 language model from OpenAI. The chatbot was trained using an array of texts from the Internet and the Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback system. The neural network was then retrained several times using its own responses to make them more accurate and correct. The developers stated that they aimed to make AI easy to use, correct, and “human”.
According to Bloomberg analysts, ChatGPT differs from other neural networks in its ability to perform tasks from various industries. The neural network can, among other things, produce basic program code, generate financial analysis, summaries of technical articles or scientific concepts, forecasts, personal advice, and ethical answers to any questions. Moreover, it memorizes the details of the dialog with the user and avoids controversial topics. Finally, the chatbot’s answers can be corrected with leading questions.
In the future, OpenAI plans to make ChatGPT available as an application programming interface so that developers can integrate the chatbot into their websites or applications.
Earlier, the British company DeepMind introduced a general-purpose artificial intelligence system similar to ChatGPT Gato. It was trained to perform 604 different tasks, including adding captions to images, participating in dialogues, and playing games. It is a transforming neural network similar to OpenAI’s GPT-3. However, access to Gato is limited.
ChatGPT: free or with a subscription
ChatGPT works like a chat in a dialog box. The neural network can be used for free, you just need to register on the OpenAI website. However, it is quite easy to pass verification using a Ukrainian phone number.
On February 1, 2022, the OpenAI team announced the launch of ChatGPT Plus subscription. For $20 per month, subscribers will receive:
- Access to ChatGPT even during peak hours (at the time of writing, the application’s website is often overloaded in the free mode, which makes it impossible to use it for some time);
- Faster response time;
- Priority access to new features.
ChatGPT Plus is currently available for US residents, but the team plans to provide access to other countries and regions in the near future.
What ChatGPT can do
The range of ChatGPT features is quite wide. In particular, with the help of a neural network, you can:
- Write code. The chatbot suggests how to perform an operation or process, as well as searches for bugs or translates code from one programming language to another.
- Answer complex questions. According to users, the quality of answers is higher than in Google search.
- An example of a ChatGPT answer to a question
- Create scenarios. With ChatGPT, you can generate new episodes of old TV shows or set certain tasks for characters in movie universes. The chatbot is also able to generate a game based on a movie.
- Compose song lyrics and sheet music.
- Give medical advice. ChatGPT suggests what to do in case of a headache or allergy, but then advises to consult a doctor.
- Create plans and calculations. ChatGPT will help you calculate your total daily energy intake or create an individualized meal plan for weight loss. However, the chatbot sometimes makes mistakes in calculations and needs to be corrected with additional questions.
- Writing essays and compositions. A Google researcher said that a chatbot wrote an essay on the difference in approaches to nationalism by political scientists Benedict Anderson and Ernest Gellner in just a minute. Other users shared how the neural network wrote essays on diversity in the modern world and the US expansion to the West in the 19th century.
- Generate queries for other neural networks. The chatbot compiles accurate hints for Midjourney and other neural networks that generate images.

How to use ChatGPT
Chatbots have limitations that you should take into account when working with them. For example, you should keep in mind that:
- ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding, but incorrect or meaningless answers. For this reason, the administration of the Stack Overflow forum for IT professionals has temporarily banned the posting of chatbot answers.
- The chatbot is sensitive to changes in the input phrase or repeated attempts to enter the same thing. The model can claim that it does not know the answer to a question in one phrase, but if you rephrase it, it answers correctly.
- The model is wordy and overuses certain phrases due to biases in the training data.
- ChatGPT does not ask clarifying questions, but usually guesses what the user meant.
- The chatbot responds to inappropriate queries and sometimes shows bias. The ChatGPT interface has a built-in moderation mechanism to block certain types of dangerous content, but users can potentially bypass it.
- AI still has “limited knowledge” of the post-2021 world and tries to avoid answering questions about specific people and events.
How to access ChatGPT
Registration in ChatGPT is not a problem for users. All you need to do is go to the OpenAI website and complete the usual registration with a phone number.
After registration, the user gets into a chat with AI. Then, they need to enter a query, and the neural network will answer in the same language. ChatGPT is best at answering questions in English, although it is not the only language available. Inside the dialog, you can either develop a conversation on one topic or ask random questions.
Controversies around ChatGPT
Opponents of ChatGPT implementation believe that the chatbot will cause a lot of court precedents for copyright infringement because it does not generate its own content.
Supporters of AI say that ChatGPT will radically change many processes. For example, it can affect the approach to education, as educational institutions will have to figure out how to replace traditional works. In their opinion, the release of ChatGPT makes AI publicly available for the first time.
Moreover, the technology is likely to push traditional search engines like Google out of the market. ChatGPT’s potential is much broader than all modern search engines that depend on companies’ business models. According to Bloomberg, about 81% of Alphabet’s revenue ($257.6 billion) in 2021 came from search engine advertising.
