Cat Allergy: Myths and Facts

Алергія на кішок: міфи та правда Useful information

Are there hypoallergenic breeds, and what is the real culprit behind allergies?

Cats are the second most common source of allergens in homes after dust mites. For many pet owners, this becomes a major issue, as parting with their furry friend is difficult. However, there are many myths surrounding cat allergies that prevent people from managing them effectively.

The main cause of allergies isn’t fur

The most common myth is that cat fur causes allergies. In reality, the reaction is triggered by a protein called **Fel d1**. It is found in cats’ saliva and skin secretions (sebaceous glands), as reported by *UHealthy*. This protein is highly volatile and easily sticks to clothes and furniture, lingering in the air for long periods. It can even spread to homes without cats—through clothing and shoes.

How the allergen spreads

When cats groom themselves, saliva containing Fel d1 remains on their fur and skin. The allergen then enters the air through shed fur and dander (dead skin cells). Even hairless cats like Sphynxes produce Fel d1, meaning there are no completely hypoallergenic breeds.

What determines allergy severity

The intensity of an allergic reaction depends on:

  • The individual cat’s Fel d1 levels
  • Gender and age
  • Neutering status

Unneutered male cats produce more allergens than females. Additionally, older cats usually have lower Fel d1 levels. The amount of allergen is not affected by fur length, color, or breed.

Do hypoallergenic cats exist? Understanding cat allergies

Do hypoallergenic cats exist?

There is no scientific evidence that any breed is completely safe for allergy sufferers. Even in the same cat, Fel d1 levels can fluctuate throughout the year.

Can a cat’s allergenicity be reduced?

In the future, cats might be vaccinated to lower Fel d1 production, but no mass developments exist yet. Specialized diets containing antibodies from chicken eggs may also help reduce protein levels. However, early childhood exposure to cats has been shown to lower allergy risks in humans. Another tip: regular wet cleaning helps minimize allergens at home.
