In a small town in the province of Trapani, Sicily, lies one of the best beaches not only on the island but in all of Italy. The sea here is so blue that the scenery looks more like a postcard than reality.

A town with incredible nature also boasts cultural attractions and delights lovers of antiquity with traditional architecture featuring miniature fishermen’s houses. San Vito Lo Capo is suitable for travelers who want to visit a corner of paradise without leaving Europe. It will be comfortable for unpretentious young backpackers, families with children, and even senior tourists.

The Beach

There is one beach here, and it stretches along the entire coastline of the town. The sand is fine and soft, the sea is blue and warm, the entry into the water is gentle — tears of happiness and beauty well up in your eyes! There are practically no underwater currents here, which is a big plus for not very skilled swimmers. Such even sandy beaches on rocky Sicily can be counted on one hand.

The beach in San Vito Lo Capo is public, meaning there is no entrance fee and you can freely set up by the water on a towel. However, you will have to pay separately for showers, toilets, and sun loungers with umbrellas.

To the west and east of San Vito Lo Capo there are rocky areas where you’ll find wilder and more secluded spots. Speaking of seclusion – be prepared (especially during the season) that there will be quite a lot of people wanting to lie on the beach in this paradise town. The sandy coast of San Vito Lo Capo is always very crowded. But you are in Sicily! At any moment, you can rent a car here and set off to conquer the wild beaches and deserted places of the island.

What to See

The small commune has its own landmarks. For example, the still operating 44-meter lighthouse Il Faro, built in 1859. It is clearly visible from various points of the town.

The main pedestrian street, Via Savoia, is interesting for its settlement-typical architecture — low, simple two-story houses without any decorations or clutter. On Via Savoia, you will find one of the town’s main architectural landmarks – the Sanctuary of San Vito (Santuario di San Vito). It was built in the 15th century, and the building has a rather austere appearance — it looks more like a fortress than a religious structure. Its interior decoration is about as ascetic as its exterior.

But the main allure of San Vito Lo Capo, like all of Sicily, is its natural beauty. So be sure to visit the nearby nature parks. The most convenient way to reach the Monte Cofano Nature Reserve (Monte Cofano) is to rent a car. There are incredibly picturesque cliffs and crags here, and the highest point of the local ridges is 660 meters above sea level. By the way, you can climb it.

The second natural park nearby is Zingaro (Riserva naturale dello Zingaro). There are many unique eco-trails here, along which exotic plants grow. At the entrance, you can get a map with all the paths of Zingaro. The park is also home to rare bird species. But the most unexpected beauty hides in small coves, hidden from prying eyes.

And, of course, explore the island! Palermo is located just 70 kilometers from San Vito Lo Capo, and Trapani is 37 kilometers away. Having flown to Sicily, you must definitely travel the whole area far and wide — it is worth it.

A Special Reason to Visit

In July, the famous local food festival Stragusto takes place in Sicily, in the city of Trapani (which is very close to San Vito Lo Capo). During the festival, dozens of stalls are set up in the city’s main square, selling street food and local delicacies. In addition to regional cuisine, you can also taste dishes popular throughout Italy at the festival. Every year, the event takes place at the end of July. This is a wonderful reason to choose Sicily for your summer vacation.
