Brief History of Bamberg
Emerging in the 7th century from a fortified castle on Cathedral Hill, Bamberg came under the rule of the ancient Franconian House of Babenberg in the early 10th century. In 1007, the city became the capital of an episcopal principality and remained so for almost 8 centuries until 1802.
During the Hussite Wars in the first half of the 15th century, Bamberg paid ransom to avoid plunder. During this same period, an uprising against episcopal rule occurred but was unsuccessful.
