What is salep
Salep tastes like liquid semolina pudding. Though it’s a very healthy pudding. Salep can be used to treat liver diseases. It has prebiotic properties. Also, since the times of sultans, this drink has been considered an excellent aphrodisiac, and modern research confirms these properties.
It also provides a feeling of satiety. One cup of salep contains about 100 calories without sugar. If you add sugar, the calorie content will approximately double.
How to Prepare Salep
To prepare the classic drink, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- natural salep flour – 1 tablespoon
- milk – 1 cup
- ground cinnamon – ½ teaspoon
- honey, sugar – to taste
Preparation process:
- Pour cold milk into a pot and add salep while constantly stirring.
- Mix until smooth and heat until thickened, but do not boil.
- Pour the prepared salep into a cup, sprinkle with cinnamon, and optionally add honey and sugar.
Salep is drunk hot. So you can serve it immediately.
Where to Try Salep in Turkey
Instant salep packets are sold in stores. They are inexpensive, but the percentage of orchid root content is minimal. Preparing salep from a packet is very simple: just pour boiling milk over the contents, add sugar and cinnamon to taste.
Remember: exporting the orchid bulb itself is prohibited. You can only export the powder.
