Portugal may not be as popular among Ukrainians as its Mediterranean neighbors, but those who have visited appreciate the friendly people, delicious local cuisine and wines, and the beauty of the coast. We can’t help but share information about the oceanside towns that travelers have recognized as the most attractive beach resorts in the country.

Lagos

Life is bustling day and night in this whitewashed city: there are many beaches within walking distance from the center, a large harbor for yachts and fishing boats, and plenty of restaurants, bars, and discos. The nature of this place is original and unique: steep banks break off down to the golden edge of the shore, and natural limestone columns rise among the ocean waves. Lagos is also notable for its architecture: among the most interesting objects are the
partially preserved Arab fortress and the Baroque church of St. Anthony with gilded wood carvings and tiles. At the end of August (29th), traditionally, the beaches of Praia da Batata and Meia Praia host farewells to summer with dancing and swimming.

Tavira

This ancient town on the Algarve coast is notable for its ancient Roman arched bridge and Moorish castle. It is also famous for its wide golden sandy beaches, about 100 meters wide, and the island of the same name, which is accessible by ferry across a narrow strait. The tourist season in Tavira lasts almost all year round. People come here in the summer for swimming and walks
along the picturesque streets, in February for the carnival, in April for the Easter procession, and in May for the seafood gastronomy festival.

Olhão

Another medieval town on the Algarve coast is the fishing village of Olhão. There are many islands with sandy beaches accessible by ferry, the famous Formosa lagoon, and in the town itself, there is a harbor, a famous fish market, and restaurants with seafood menus. At the end of summer, it’s time for food festivals in Olhão, with concerts and seafood tastings.

Around Porto

Viana do Castelo

The medieval city of shipbuilders and the birthplace of seafarers is original and rich in history. It is built up with luxurious houses in the Baroque, Gothic, and Manueline styles: the central square, Praça da República, with the town hall, is especially beautiful. You can find many beaches in the surrounding area. In August 2019, kiteboarding competitions will be held here – riding a board with a parachute, thousands of guests will gather for this colorful spectacle.

Aveiro

This town with a centuries-old history is a place of pilgrimage for tourists visiting Porto. Over hundreds of years, it flourished in the cod trade and then experienced decline. Aveiro is riddled with canals with colorful boats floating on them – just like in Venice. It is also famous for its Art Nouveau architecture and unusual fishing district. The beautiful beaches of Costa Nova are located here, which can be quickly reached by bus, and in the evening you can return to the city and immerse yourself in its vibrant nightlife. At the end of August, gondola races are held here; the regatta is accompanied by festive performances and a competition for the most beautiful boat.

Around Lisbon

Nazaré

The popular summer resort of Nazaré is located near a wide bay hidden among the rocks. The fishing history of this settlement is reflected in the character and clothing of the locals: here you can see women in
fluffy skirts drying fish and trading in the market, as well as men in plaid shirts and hats that have been worn since time immemorial. In the ocean, near the city, there is one of the largest underwater canyons, over 200 km long and up to 5 km deep. Huge waves created by hitting this ridge attract surfers here. It is interesting to come here in May to admire the bright festival of the Sea with a procession and a parade of fishing boats.

Peniche

Another place popular with surfers is Peniche, a city famous for its huge waves, beautiful beaches, golf courses, fishing, and historical architecture. Here it is worth visiting the richly decorated Misericórdia church, as well as the Fortaleza fortress – a former prison, now a museum, located behind the dilapidated 16th-century city wall. 10 km from the coast lies the Berlengas archipelago, with a nature reserve and sunken ships. This fall, from October 16 to 28, surfing competitions will be held near Peniche: spectators will enjoy dizzying tricks and fun parties.

Cascais

Cascais is located 30 km from the capital of Portugal and near the westernmost point of the continent – Cape Roca. This resort town was once a fishing village, then it was chosen as the summer residence of the royal family, and in the last century, wealthy residents
of Lisbon built mansions here. However, the spirit of the seaside village has been preserved to this day: the harbor is filled with boats, and picturesque streets are lined with fish restaurants. At the end of February – beginning of March, Cascais hosts an annual carnival with parades, performances, parties, and gastronomic delights.

Azeitão

Located south of Lisbon, the town of Azeitão is known to gourmets for its wine, cheese, and sweets. In addition, the famous Portuguese azulejo tiles have been baked here for a long time, which can be bought as souvenirs, and you can even learn how to paint them. In the town and its surroundings, it is worth visiting the Palácio de José Maria da Fonseca with its winery, where the famous Moscatel wine is produced, and the 15th-century Quinta da Bacalhoa estate.

Azenhas do Mar

The ancient town of Azenhas do Mar is built on the high bank of the Atlantic Ocean in the municipality of Sintra – not far from the famous medieval castles and the Portuguese capital itself. The coast is famous for its beautiful beaches and rocky grottoes filled with water. One of the caves hides
the Azenhas do Mar restaurant, which serves excellent lobster with Ramiro wine from local winemakers.
