<p>Akdamar is a small island home to the Church of the Holy Cross. This is a masterpiece of Armenian medieval architecture dating back to the 10th century. The church facades are adorned with exquisite stone carvings depicting biblical scenes. In 2010, after a hiatus of nearly a century, Turkish authorities permitted a service to be held in the church, and since then, an Armenian liturgy has taken place here annually.</p>
<p>For history enthusiasts, we recommend visiting the modern Van Museum, opened in 2019 near the fortress. It replaced the old museum damaged by the 2011 earthquake and includes a wide range of artifacts, works of art, and exhibits spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum&#8217;s exhibits are organized thematically and cover archaeology, ethnography, decorative and applied arts, as well as local customs and traditions. The main highlight of the museum is the Urartian artifacts, including monumental sculptures, inscriptions, and ceramics, which provide insight into the ancient civilization that once flourished in this region.</p>

<p>Varagavank Monastery (also known as Yedi Kilise — Seven Churches) is a historic Armenian monastery located in a picturesque mountain valley. Founded in ancient times, it reached its peak in the early 11th century under the reign of King Senekerim Artsruni. The complex included a main church, chapels, a cemetery, and several ancient stone crosses (khachkars). Today, the monastery is in a state of picturesque ruins, yet even now you can see the remains of reliefs and fragments of frescoes on biblical themes, and appreciate the grandeur of Armenian architecture set against mountain landscapes.</p>
