<p>Nessebar (or <em>Nesebar</em> Bulgarian: <em>Несебър</em>) &#8211; an ancient city in the southeastern part of <a href="https://mandry.club/en/countries/bulgaria/">Bulgaria</a> on the Black Sea coast. Located north of <a href="https://mandry.club/en/cities/burgas-bulgaria/">Burgas</a> and considered the cultural treasury of the country. Nessebar is one of the most beautiful Bulgarian cities, with centuries of history and preserved architectural monuments from all periods of its millennial existence. Here you can find remains of Roman and medieval walls, numerous ancient Byzantine and Bulgarian churches, as well as old houses in the style of the Bulgarian National Revival.</p>
<blockquote class="info"><p>The most enchanting feature of Nessebar is its old town, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and located on a rocky peninsula connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. The peninsula is 850 meters long and 300 meters wide. The new town includes the famous Sunny Beach resort, modern residential buildings, and numerous hotels.</p></blockquote>

<p>Nessebar is located in the southeastern part of Bulgaria in the Burgas region. The city has a subtropical climate with warm summers and cool winters.</p>

<h3 id="history">History</h3>
<p>Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe. In the first millennium BC, there was an ancient Thracian settlement called Mesembria. In 510 BC, it became a Greek colony. The Greeks built fortifications, an agora, acropolis, and other structures here. Most of the ancient city was destroyed by an earthquake and ended up underwater. Only ruins of fortress walls and towers built from hewn limestone, as well as fragments of the agora and several buildings, have survived to our time.</p>
<p>In the 1st century BC, the city was captured by the Roman Empire. Then Nessebar became part of Byzantium. In the 9th century, the city was occupied by the Bulgarians and received its current name. Nessebar reached its greatest prosperity in the 13th-14th centuries during the Second Bulgarian Empire. During this period, about 40 churches were built here.</p>

<p>In the 15th century, Nessebar fell under Ottoman pressure. The Turks destroyed its walls and numerous architectural monuments. In the 18th-19th centuries, numerous buildings in the Bulgarian National Revival style were built in the historical center.</p>

<p>The nearest airport is in Burgas (BOJ), located just 25 km from Nessebar. During high season, there are direct flights from many European cities. From the airport to Nessebar, you can get:</p>

<p>Nessebar has a charming old town located on a small picturesque peninsula. <p>Since its foundation, Nessebar has always been surrounded by fortress walls, fragments of which have survived to this day. The first fortifications were built by the Thracians in the 8th century BC. Later, in the 5th century BC, Greek colonists built new fortifications. Then the fortress walls were strengthened by the Romans and Byzantines. Nessebar&#8217;s fortifications were destroyed by the Ottomans. The ancient ruins, mainly dating from the Hellenistic period, include the acropolis, Temple of Apollo, agora, and fragments of Thracian and later Byzantine fortifications.</p>

<p>The <strong>Old Windmill</strong> is one of Nessebar&#8217;s symbols. It can be assumed that this wooden structure belongs to the Bulgarian National Revival era and was built between the 17th and 19th centuries.</p>

<p>The <strong>Church of Saint Sophia</strong> is an ancient Byzantine church completed in the 6th century. It is a three-nave basilica with a semicircular apse, narthex, and atrium. The present structure dates from the 9th century — the period of the last reconstruction. In the 13th century, the church was plundered by the Venetians and abandoned in the 18th century. Its religious relics are now kept in the Church of San Salvatore in <a href="https://mandry.club/mista/venice/">Venice</a>.</p>

<p>The <strong>Church of Saint Theodore</strong> is a small single-nave structure built in the 13th century. Its facade is decorated with blind arches of dressed stone and brick. The space under the arches is decorated with checkered zigzag patterns of stone blocks.</p>
<p>The <strong>Church of the Holy Savior</strong> is a small 17th-century religious structure known for its wall paintings.</p>
<p>The <strong>Basilica of the Holy Virgin Eleusa</strong> is a church on the northern side of the peninsula, built in the 6th century. Until the 14th century, it was part of a monastery that was probably destroyed by an earthquake.</p>
<p>The <strong>Church of Saint Stephen</strong> is a medieval three-nave basilica with wonderful frescoes, now converted into a museum. The eastern part of the building is the oldest and probably dates to the 11th century. Several centuries later, the church was expanded by adding a new structure to the west.</p>
