History

Glasgow was founded in the late 6th century and evolved from a small rural settlement to the largest seaport in Scotland. According to legend, the city was founded by St. Mungo, who built a monastery on the banks of the Molendinar River (now the site of the cathedral). The first written records date back to the 12th century. By the end of that century, the city had become an important religious center. Between 1175 and 1178, Glasgow received city rights and trade privileges, which contributed to its growth and development. In 1451, a university was established here, which is one of the oldest in the United Kingdom.

Panoramic view of Glasgow

In the 16th century, the city’s significance slightly declined due to the Reformation. In 1611, Glasgow became a royal city. However, throughout the 16th and part of the 17th centuries, it remained a provincial town. In the second half of the 17th century, Glasgow transformed into a major center of transatlantic trade. After severe fires, wooden structures were replaced by stone buildings. In the 18th century, the Industrial Revolution turned it into one of the largest industrial centers in Britain. In the 19th century, it became the largest city in Scotland. Today, Glasgow is one of the most successful cities in the United Kingdom.
