All About Dalaman: Location, Population, and Infrastructure

Dalaman (Turkish: Dalaman) is a city located in southwestern Turkey in Mugla province near the Mediterranean Sea coast. Its population is slightly more than 37 thousand people. The name Dalaman refers not only to the city but also to an entire district covering 62 square kilometers that has formed around the resort. The city is spread across flat terrain with fertile lands where citrus cultivation is developed. Dalaman has gained popularity among foreign tourists quite recently but already offers its guests quite convenient infrastructure.

The International Airport is located 6.4 km south of the city and is one of three airports operating in the region. This is where tourists arrive who have decided to vacation in Dalaman and at such popular resorts in the area as Fethiye and Marmaris. The facility itself and its surroundings have become attractive to travelers primarily due to the picturesque nature, large number of attractions, well-maintained coastline, and transparent sea waters. And although this is a relatively young resort, here you’ll find many excellent hotels, cafes and restaurants, as well as entertainment activities.

Lake Köyceğiz: Turkey’s Largest Coastal Lake

One of Turkey’s largest coastal lakes, covering an area of 5200 hectares, is located 30 km northwest of Dalaman. Besides picturesque landscapes, this natural attraction provides great opportunities for water sports, particularly windsurfing and rowing. Many tourists come here to take a boat trip, during which they visit a small island where the ruins of an ancient prison are preserved. Köyceğiz with its rich flora and fauna will be interesting for fishing enthusiasts, and the Thermal springs and mud ponds located near the southern shores of the lake allow travelers to engage in body wellness.

Ancient City of Kaunos: Historical Landmark of Dalaman

In Turkey, northwest of Dalaman, lies the ancient city of Caunos or Kaunos, which has preserved to this day the ruins of what was once a successful trading center. Kaunos appeared in the third millennium BC, and among its ruins are tombs, an amphitheater destroyed by centuries, and remains of ancient houses. Notably, you can only reach the attraction from the eastern part by crossing the Dalyan River. Archaeological excavations continue here to this day, during which it has already been discovered that the city went through Byzantine and Roman periods, as well as the Middle Ages.

Sultaniye Mud Baths: Thermal Springs and Healing Procedures

Among Dalaman’s attractions in Turkey, a special place is occupied by thermal springs enriched with sulfur, which successfully treat many skin conditions. The mud ponds formed as a result of natural processes are filled with hot water, and their bottom is lined with healing mud. Many come here to improve their health, boost their body’s tone, and also treat dermatitis, rheumatism, and other ailments. The mud bath is located in a town called Sultaniye, situated near the southwestern shores of Lake Köyceğiz.

Turtle Breeding Center: Unique Sea Turtle Conservation Center

The city of Dalaman in Turkey is also known for such an attraction as the state turtle breeding center, whose purpose became the preservation of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta) species that inhabit the surrounding sea waters. The Center’s staff provide favorable conditions for the growth of hatchlings that have emerged from eggs laid on the seashore. And after reaching a certain age, the workers release the baby turtles into the open sea.
