Sharjah, UAE

“The strictest of the emirates, Sharjah invites travelers to relax in a comfortable, cozy, and absolutely safe place. A balanced ‘neighbor’ of Dubai, it welcomes guests seeking a peaceful retreat, especially families dreaming of a vacation free from noise and hustle.

Sharjah (United Arab Emirates)

Among all the emirates that make up the UAE, Sharjah is the third largest and the first in terms of strict laws. It is a completely ‘dry’ emirate, where bars with alcoholic beverages are not even available in every hotel. It is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Its capital and main resort area is the city of Sharjah, which shares its name with the emirate. Sharjah borders the lesser-known Ajman and the popular Dubai, but unlike the latter, it follows a more humane pricing policy and offers a democratic range of hotels. The entry rules for Sharjah are the same as for the entire UAE: Ukrainian tourists can stay in the country for 30 days without a pre-arranged visa.

Key Attractions

Al-Markazi

The Blue Souk of Sharjah is the largest traditional market (souk) in the emirate. Operating since 1979, it is one of the most popular spots for tourists. Built in a traditional Islamic style, it offers an impressive selection of gold jewelry. The quality and variety are so appealing that even locals frequently visit Al-Markazi. Besides gold, you can buy carpets, antiques, and electronics. For a full shopping experience, there are 600 stalls operating in the Blue Souk.

Old Town Al-Mureijah

The historic heart of the city—the ancient Al-Mureijah quarter—features some of Sharjah’s most remarkable structures under the open sky. Examples include Al-Hisn Fort and the Literary Square with the House of Poetry.

King Faisal Mosque

This massive religious structure appeared in the city center in 1986 after 10 years of construction. The mosque is renowned not only for its scale—it also houses the International Islamic University—but also for its unique design. While one side resembles a classical mosque, the other looks like a giant ocean liner.

Numerous Museums

The variety and number of museums in the emirate’s capital are inspiring. You can easily find a “temple of history” to your liking in the city and its surroundings. Options include the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, Heritage Museum, Calligraphy Museum, Sharjah Art Museum, Desert Park, and more.

Al-Qasba

A popular tourist pedestrian zone where you can find leisure spots, cafés, restaurants, shops, attractions, galleries, and a giant Ferris wheel offering breathtaking views of the surroundings.

Unique Culinary Traditions

Residents of Sharjah follow the same gastronomic customs as other emirates. Pork is not prepared here, and alcohol is not served, but the variety of spices and meat-based dishes—such as lamb and veal—is astounding. You can try delicious shawarma, falafel, manakish (flatbread with melted cheese, olives, and herbs), nakanek (lamb sausages), shish tawook (chicken skewers), mezze (an assortment of appetizers and sauces), and brik (fish in crispy thin pastry).

Who Should Visit Sharjah?

Sharjah proudly holds the title of the UAE’s cultural capital. It has a high concentration of museums, galleries, leisure centers, and theaters. The strict laws of the emirate only emphasize its spiritual essence in the broadest sense. There are no loud parties or hookah lounges here, and on municipal beaches, Mondays are designated as ‘Ladies’ Day,’ when men are not allowed on the shore. A vacation in Sharjah is measured and peaceful.

Beach Lovers

Due to the layout of Sharjah’s tourist zone, many hotels—even 3-4* ones—are within walking distance of the beach. All beaches are sandy, divided into private and public sections, with gentle water entry. Popular beach areas include Al-Kornish and Al-Khan.

Fans of Sightseeing

Dozens of museums, galleries, and the ‘scenery’ of Old Town Al-Mureijah will keep you entertained under the hot Arabian sun. You can easily explore the emirate’s culture, local traditions, historical heritage, and contemporary art.

Romantic Couples

A vacation in Sharjah is ideal for travelers seeking tranquility and solitude. You can stroll under the moonlight, relax on the beach, wander through ancient streets, shop for gifts at the Blue Souk, or buy souvenirs at Sharjah’s large malls together.

Family-Friendly Destination

Sharjah is a perfect place for a family vacation. In addition to excellent beaches, pleasant weather, and a harmonious atmosphere—unlike other resorts with noisy crowds, bars, and all-night parties—there are plenty of activities for children. These include the amusement zone in Al-Qasba, Al-Montazah Park, and Sharjah Aquarium.

Sharjah for a Family Getaway

Cozy, harmonious, and safe, Sharjah is an alternative to noisy Turkey, welcoming travelers who prefer a peaceful and affordable vacation. It’s ideal for those who enjoy sunset views over loud parties and for young parents wanting to give their children a wonderful trip.
