Portugal is not yet as popular, as neighboring Mediterranean countries, but those who have visited it have appreciated the friendliness of the people, the taste of local cuisine and wines, and the beauty of the coast. And we can’t help but share with you information about the towns located near the ocean, which were noted by travelers as the most attractive beach resorts in the country.
This snow-white city is in full swing day and night: there are many beaches literally within walking distance of the center, a large harbor for yachts and fishing boats, as well as many restaurants, bars and discos. The nature of this place is original and unique: steep banks plunge down to the golden edge of the shore, and unmanufactured limestone columns rise among the ocean waves. Lagos is also notable for its architecture: among the most interesting objects are the Arabian fortress, which has partially survived to this day, as well as the barrel-vaulted church of St. Anthony with gilded wooden carvings and tiles. At the end of August (on the 29th), according to tradition, the beaches of Praia Batata and Meia Praia host summer farewells with dancing and swimming.
The ancient town on the Algarve coast is notable for its ancient Roman arch bridge and Moorish castle. This place is also famous for its wide golden sandy beaches about 100 meters wide and the island of the same name, which is reached by ferry through a narrow strait. The tourist season in Tavira lasts almost all year round. People come here in the summer for swimming and walking along the picturesque streets, in February, when the carnival is held here, in April for the Easter procession, and in May for the gastronomic festival of seafood.
Another medieval town on the Algarve coast is the fishing village of Olhão. There are many islands with sandy beaches accessible by ferry, the famous Formosa Lagoon, and the town itself has a harbor and a famous fish market and restaurants with a seafood menu. At the end of summer, Olyan is the time for food festivals with concerts and seafood tastings.
The medieval city of shipbuilders and the birthplace of sailors is distinctive and rich in history. It is lined with luxurious Baroque, Gothic and Manueline buildings: the central Praça da República square with the city hall is especially beautiful. There are many beaches in the vicinity, and in August 2019, kiteboarding competitions will be held here, with thousands of guests gathering to watch this colorful spectacle.
This town with a long history is a place of pilgrimage for tourists visiting Porto. For hundreds of years, it has thrived on the cod trade and then fallen into decline. Aveiro is riddled with canals with colorful boats – just like in Venice – and is also famous for its Art Nouveau architecture and unusual fishing area. There are beautiful beaches of Costa Nova, which can be reached quickly by bus, and in the evening return to the city and plunge into its vibrant nightlife. At the end of August, gondola boat races are held in this place, the regatta is accompanied by festive performances and a competition for the most beautiful boat.
The popular summer resort of Nazare is located near a wide bay hidden among the rocks. The fishing history of this settlement is reflected in the character and clothing of the locals: here you can see women in puffy skirts drying fish and selling them in the market, as well as men in checkered shirts and hats that have been worn since time immemorial. In the ocean, not far from the city, there is one of the largest underwater canyons, over 200 km long and up to 5 km deep. The huge waves created by hitting this ridge attract surfers here. It is interesting to come here in May to admire the colorful Sea Festival with a procession and parade of fishing boats.
Another popular surfing destination is Peniche, a city famous for its huge waves, beautiful beaches, golf courses, fishing and historic architecture. Here you should visit the richly decorated Miserecodia Cathedral, as well as the Fortaleza Fortress, a former prison and now a museum, located behind the dilapidated 16th-century city wall. The Berlengash mini-archipelago with a nature reserve and sunken ships lies 10 km from the coast. This fall, from October 16 to 28, surfing competitions will be held near Peniche: spectators will see dizzying tricks and fun parties.

Cascais is located 30 km from the capital of Portugal and not far from the westernmost point of the continent – Cape Roca. The site of this resort was once a fishing village, then it was chosen as the summer residence of the royal family, and in the last century, wealthy residents of Lisbon built mansions here. Nevertheless, the spirit of the seaside village has been preserved to this day: there are many boats in the harbor, and fish restaurants are located on the picturesque streets. In late February – early March, Cascais hosts an annual carnival with processions, performances, parties and gastronomic delights.
Located south of Lisbon, the town of Aveitão is known for its gourmet wine, cheese, and sweets. In addition, the famous Portuguese azulejo tiles have long been baked here, which you can buy as a souvenir and learn how to paint. In the city and its surroundings, it is worth visiting the Palácio José Maria da Fonseca Palace with a winery where the famous Moscatel wine is produced, and the 15th-century Quinta da Bacalhaia manor.
The ancient city of Agenas do Mar is built on the high shore of the Atlantic Ocean in the municipality of Sintra, not far from the famous medieval castles and the Portuguese capital itself. The coast is famous for its beautiful beaches and rocky grottoes filled with water. One of the caves hides the restaurant Azenas do Mar, which serves excellent lobsters with Ramos wine from local winemakers.
