City of Ordu (Turkey)

Ordu is a city on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, the capital of the province of the same name. A port city, formerly known as Konya or Kotera. Ordu is a nice city where a small piece of the old center has been preserved. The waterfront of Ordu attracts with its simplicity, it is ennobled, its length is 2 kilometers. Sandy beaches and clean air, an ideal place for walking. There are many theaters and cinemas in the city, and regular cultural events are held.

Geography and climate

Ordu is located on the Black Sea coast, at the mouth of the Mele River on the eastern slope of Boztepe. The road connecting Trabzon and Samsun passes through the city. Ordu has a mild climate with cool summers and moderate winters with high rainfall.

History

The history of the city dates back to the 7th century BC. Then the Romans and the kingdom of Trebizond in Ponte ruled the area until a branch of the Turkic Oghuz tribe came to the Horde in the 14th century AD, forming the principality of Amir. During the Ottoman Empire, Ordu remained a district of the Trabzon province, then after the Republic it became a province itself. The modern city was founded by the Ottomans as Bayramli as a military outpost

Ordu

In 1869, the name of the city was changed to Horde. At the turn of the 20th century, the city was more Christian (most of the population was Greek and Armenian) and was known for its Greek schools. At this time, Ordu is a center of fishing, processing, and export of hazelnuts and wood.

Boztepe

The city of Ordu was founded on the slopes of Boztepe Hill. It is located at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level. From here you can see all the beauty of the city and the splendor of the Black Sea. Boztepe is located 6 kilometers from the city center, you can climb the hill by asphalt road or cable car if you want. At the top there are designated places for eating, drinking and resting, as well as picnic areas in the forest.

Hamam (Ordu Yalı Hamamı)

Located in the central area, rectangular in shape, the corners are made of faceted stone, and the rest of the parts are made of crushed stone. The building consists of two parts. The second part consists of two floors, and the top is made of wood.

Kotera (Bozukkale)

Bozukkale, according to XI research, is known as the first settlement site of the Horde province. It is a small watchtower built in the 19th century. It is located on the Ordu-Samsun highway, 2 km from the city center, by the sea. It is registered as an archaeological site of the 2nd degree.

Düz Mahalle Church

The church is located in the center of the city of Ordu. It was built by the Greeks in the 19th century. It has a rectangular shape, with arches in the front, and the walls are made of gray stone. It served as a fire station for some time, and was restored and opened for use in 1975.

Ethnographic Museum – Pashaoglu Mansion

Pashaoğlu Mansion was built by Pashaoğlu Hüseyin Efendi in 1896. The stones of the mansion, which was built on a 625-square-meter plot with its own garden, were brought from Unye, and the wooden material was from Romania, and its construction was carried out by a master from Istanbul. The Pashaoğlu Mansion is one of the most beautiful examples of 19th-century architecture here.

The stone finishes, pedestals, and semi-columns with lids at the corners of the building, supported by consoles with floral motifs, demonstrate the rich craftsmanship of those times. Garden walls, staircases, balconies, and stone balustrades along the edges of the roof add to the liveliness of the mansion. There is a fountain in the garden. The ground floor of the Pashaoğlu Mansion is paved with stone. The floors are wooden on the first and second floors, and the ceilings are also made of wood. The wooden ceiling of the hall on the top floor of the mansion is decorated with oil paintings. In the middle of the ceiling are floral motifs in the form of baklava. Various landscapes are depicted in medallions in the corners. Patterned tiles were used in the bathroom.

The Pashaoğlu Mansion began to be restored in 1983, with repairs and arrangements completed in 1987, after which it was named the Pashaoğlu Mansion and Ethnographic Museum. The first floor of the building is organized as an ethnographic museum. It displays weapons, jewelry, women’s and men’s clothing, etc. The second floor reflects the features of a local 19th century mansion with amenities such as a sofa, chest of drawers, bedroom, guest room.

Atik Ibrahim Pasha Mosque

The mosque was built by Atik Ibrahim Pasha in 1770, but in 1802, due to its destruction over time, it underwent restoration. The mosque has a rectangular minaret with two balconies. The most beautiful part of the mosque is its altar, built in the Baroque style.

Osman Pasha Fountain

Osman Pasha Fountain Osman Pasha Fountain was built in 1842 by the governor of Trabzon, Hazinedarzade Osman Pasha, who came from the Horde. It was demolished in 1937 and rebuilt in 1997 by army businessman Fakhri Celebi under the leadership of the Ordu Municipality. Due to the height of its columns, it is the tallest fountain in Turkey.
