Montpellier (French: Montpellier) is a city in the south of France, in the Occitanie region, near the Mediterranean coast. It is one of the largest urban centers in the southern part of the country and the capital of the Hérault department. Montpellier is situated on the Lez River, 10 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The city is 170 km from Marseille, 242 km from Toulouse, and 748 km from Paris. Montpellier has a warm Mediterranean climate, with hot, sunny summers and rainy, cool winters.
Montpellier was first mentioned in the late 10th century, when a local feudal lord merged two villages. In 1141, the Count of Toulouse built a castle here and granted the settlement urban privileges. By the end of the 12th century, Montpellier had become a major trading hub with connections across the Mediterranean. French, Spanish, Muslims, and Jews coexisted relatively peacefully here. In 1220, the University of Montpellier was founded. From the 13th century until the mid-14th century, the city belonged to the Counts of Roussillon. In 1349, Montpellier was sold to the French crown.
Under French rule, the city became one of the largest commercial centers in the Mediterranean, remaining so until the 16th century when Marseille began to flourish. During the Huguenot Wars, Montpellier was besieged by royal troops. Later, it became the capital of the Lower Languedoc province.
Montpellier has a charming Old Town (L’Écusson), stretching from the Promenade du Peyrou to Place de la Comédie. It is a labyrinth of narrow streets and cozy squares with historic buildings from the 16th to 18th centuries.
Promenade du Peyrou — one of the most famous spots in Montpellier, located at the highest point of the city, west of the old walls. This open space was established in the early 18th century during the reign of Louis XIV. The statue of this monarch was modeled after an earlier version that was melted down to make cannons. The most notable feature here is the Château d’Eau, a monumental water tower fed by the ancient 14-km-long Saint-Clément aqueduct.
Triumphal Arch — the entrance to the Promenade du Peyrou. Built in 1693, it was modeled after a similar structure in Paris.
Place de la Comédie — one of the central squares of Montpellier, known for its lively atmosphere, numerous restaurants, and shops. Located between the Old Town and newer districts, the square features beautiful neoclassical architecture. At its center is a fountain built in the late 18th century.
Saint-Pierre Cathedral — a monumental Gothic-style cathedral built on the site of a 14th-century medieval chapel. The cathedral survived the religious wars largely unscathed. Hidden among the streets of the Old Town, it features a grand portal with two massive columns.
Saint Roch Church — a neo-Gothic church in the heart of the Old Town, built in 1861. This religious structure is dedicated to the patron saint of Montpellier.
Saint Anne Church — a former church now housing a contemporary art center. This beautiful neo-Gothic building dates back to the 19th century.
