History

Historians believe that a settlement existed on the site of the modern city since Roman times. In the 10th century, Annecy was under Geneva’s rule, and in the early 15th century, it came under the control of the House of Savoy. With the rise of Calvinism, the city became a center of the Counter-Reformation. During the French Revolution, Haute-Savoie was conquered by France. In 1815, after the Bourbon Restoration, it was returned to the Savoy dynasty. Annecy and this historic region finally became part of France in 1860.
